Corrosion

“Materials in contact with aggressive environments undergo a form of chemical and physical decay which, as far as metallic materials in particular are concerned, is known as corrosion. Corrosion can be defined as an attack by atmospheric agents or other aggressive means on materials, especially metals, which leads to the slow but progressive alteration of the characteristics – often not only on the surface – of the material. An idea of the importance of corrosion in industrial activities can be obtained from its economic impact: in industrialized countries, the cost of corrosion is around 3-4% of gross domestic product.”

Studies related to corrosion focus on the evaluation of both the corrosion behavior of metallic materials in aggressive environments, and of the beneficial effect of differently produced oxide coatings to increase corrosion resistance. Topics are developed in collaboration with, and with the assistance of, PoliLaPP – Laboratory of materials corrosion “Pietro Pedeferri”.
